TIM

A TIM file is a plain-text, tab-separated list of wind observations: one row per observation, with wind speed and wind direction. It has no timestamps, so ArchiWind cannot tell which season a row belongs to.

Yearly or seasonal files

Under Wind data source, choose one of:

  • Yearly TIM file: upload one file. ArchiWind builds a single wind rose from all rows and uses it for every period, so annual, summer and winter results share the same wind statistics.
  • Seasonal TIM files: upload two files, one with summer observations (May to October) and one with winter observations (November to April). Both are required. The summer file gives the summer wind rose, the winter file gives the winter wind rose, and the rows of both files together give the annual wind rose. Monthly results use the wind rose of the season the month belongs to.

Seasonal files use the same format as a yearly file, and each is validated on its own. Both share one Meteorological data recorded height and Roughness length, so record both seasons at the same station and height.

File structure

  • Plain text (ASCII or UTF-8) with no byte-order mark.
  • File extension .tim or .TIM, maximum 20 MB.
  • Line endings: CRLF (Windows) or LF. Blank lines are ignored.
  • Two columns per row, separated by one tab character.
  • Optional header line, such as WS+fctr<TAB>WD. If the first line is not a valid observation, it is treated as a header and skipped.

Columns

#Example headerMeaningUnitAllowed values
1WS+fctrWind speedm/sNumber ≥ 0
2WDWind direction, clockwise from north, direction the wind blows fromdegreesNumber from 0 to 360

Write numbers with a decimal point ., a leading digit (0.5, not .5), no thousands separators and no spaces around them.

How the data is used

  • Each row counts as one observation of equal weight. Use a constant recording interval, such as hourly. With seasonal files, use the same interval in both: the annual wind rose weights each season by its number of rows.
  • Row order does not matter.
  • Rows with a speed below 0.5 m/s (calm) are ignored.
  • 0° and 360° both mean north.
  • Speeds are taken to be measured at the Meteorological data recorded height you enter with the upload (1–300 m). The optional Roughness length (0–0.7 m, lower than that height) describes the terrain at the recording location.

Invalid rows

A row is skipped as invalid if:

  • it does not have exactly two columns;
  • a cell is empty or not a number (for example #VALUE! or NoData);
  • the speed is negative, or the direction is outside 0–360.

Skipped rows do not stop the upload. After uploading, ArchiWind shows a preview for each file of the first and last observations, with the number of usable observations, calm observations and invalid rows skipped. Check these counts before running the simulation.

Rejected files

A file is rejected on upload if no row is a valid observation with a speed of at least 0.5 m/s.
