TAB
A TAB file is a wind climate summary: how often the wind blows from each of 12 direction sectors and, for each sector, a histogram of wind speeds in 1 m/s bins. ArchiWind uses the same statistics for every period (year, seasons and months).
File structure
- Plain text, values separated by tabs or spaces. Commas are not supported.
- File extension
.tabor.TAB, maximum 10 MB. - Line endings: CRLF (Windows) or LF.
| Line | Content | Used by ArchiWind |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Title, free text | No |
| 2 | Latitude, longitude and height above ground | No. Enter the height with the upload instead. |
| 3 | Number of sectors, speed factor, direction offset | No. They must be 12, 1 and 0. |
| 4 | Frequency of each sector, in %, summing to 100 | Yes |
| 5 onwards | One row per speed bin: the bin’s upper limit in m/s, then that bin’s frequency for each sector | Yes |
Sectors and speed bins
- Exactly 12 sectors of 30°. Sector 1 is centred on north (345°–15°), sector 2 on 30°, and so on clockwise.
- Speed bins are 1 m/s wide and numbered by their upper limit:
1for 0–1 m/s,2for 1–2 m/s, and so on. Each bin counts as its centre speed (0.5, 1.5, … m/s). If the bin numbers are not consecutive, each number is used as the speed itself. - Each sector’s histogram is normalised on its own, so its values can be in ‰ (summing to 1000), in % or as fractions.
- The speed factor and direction offset on line 3 are not applied. Speeds must already be in m/s, and sector 1 must already face north.
How the data is used
- ArchiWind takes the first line with at least 4 numbers that sum to 100 (±1) as the sector frequencies.
- Every later line with exactly 13 numbers (bin and 12 sectors) is a speed bin.
- Lines containing any text are skipped.
- The statistics are the same for the year, both seasons and every month.
- Speeds are taken to be measured at the Meteorological data recorded height you enter with the upload (1–300 m). The optional Roughness length (0–0.7 m, lower than that height) describes the terrain at the recording location.
- After uploading, ArchiWind shows a preview of each sector’s frequency and mean speed, and the overall mean wind speed.
Rejected files
A file is rejected on upload if:
- no line has at least 4 numbers summing to 100 (±1);
- the first such line does not have exactly 12 numbers;
- no later line has exactly 13 numbers.
